Autism Spectrum Disorders 101

These are the facts

Autism is defined as a behavioral diagnosis characterized by the absence of typical behaviors, such as social skills and the presence of atypical behaviors.

  • 1:68 children; 1:42 boys (CDC, 2014)
  • Boys 5 times more affected than girls
  • 60% of monozygotic twins were concordant for autism (Bailey A, et. al., 1995)
  • Sibling recurrence risk of almost 1:5 (18.7%) (Ozonoff S, et. al., 2011)
  • Nearly all children who fail their autism screening WILL meet diagnostic criteria for some developmental delay


The START Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) 101 training is provided by both START/OPS and Oregon Center Children and Youth with Special Health Needs (OCCYSHN) at Oregon Health and Science University through their Project ACCESS grant.  The purpose of this training is to improve screening, referral and management of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Developmental Disabilities in a medical home.

CaCoon (CAre COordinatiON) Program: nurses offer home visits in which they provide families with information and skills to coordinate care for their children with complex health conditions.

OPAL-K provides free, same-day child psychiatric phone consultation to primary care clinicians in Oregon.
